Shippingtelegraph.com: Trump orders nuclear submarines repositioned in response to Russia’s war threat
by Shipping Telegraph
US President Donald Trump ordered two nuclear submarines to be “positioned in the appropriate regions” in response to “provocative statements” from deputy chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Medvedev.
In what he called an effort to be “prepared,” Trump said in a Truth Social post that he had “ordered two nuclear submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that.”
The president did not specify what type of submarines were being moved or where to, and the Pentagon usually reveals little about any of its submarine’s movements.
The former Russian president said Trump should “remember” that Russia “isn’t Israel or even Iran” and characterized Trump’s ultimatum as “a threat and a step towards war” between Russia and the United States.
In Friday’s post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Based on the highly provocative statements of the Former President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, who is now the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that. Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances.”
Medvedev, who has been engaged in an “online battle of words” with Trump for the past several days, accused Mr Trump of engaging in a “game of ultimatums with Russia: 50 days or 10…”
He said: “Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with his own country. Don’t go down the Sleepy Joe road.”
Last week, Medvedev accused Trump of “playing the ultimatum game with Russia” after Trump said he was shortening a 50-day deadline he set for Russia to end its war in Ukraine or be hit with secondary sanctions and tariffs.
Speaking alongside British prime minister Keir Starmer in Scotland, Trump said he was giving Moscow only 10 to 12 days to reach a deal to end the war in Ukraine before he would impose the so-called secondary sanctions and tariffs.
Trump in July said that Russia had 50 days to agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine or risk being hit with severe tariffs.
Donald Trump told the reporters during a meeting with the NATO secretary general Mark Rutte at the White House on July 14 that he is “very unhappy with Russia”, threatening to slap Russia with 100% “secondary” tariffs unless it secured a peace deal with Ukraine within 50 days.
Medvedev at the time said that Russia “didn’t care” about the threats.
In a post on X, Medvedev responded to Trump’s announcement, saying: “Trump issued a theatrical ultimatum to the Kremlin. The world shuddered, expecting the consequences. Belligerent Europe was disappointed. Russia didn’t care.”
In recent weeks, Trump has been enmeshed in an escalating war of words with Medvedev, who currently serves as the deputy chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation.
The Kremlin has so far made no public comments on the issue.
