Splash247: Ernst Russ bolsters MPP fleet

Frankfurt-listed Ernst Russ is expanding its presence in the multipurpose segment with the acquisition of two modern heavylift vessels fixed on long-term charters.

The Hamburg-based owner has bought the 12,500 dwt MPPs Ronnie and Charlie, both of which will be chartered to dship Carriers for seven years. The ships are scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2026.

The vessels are F500-type multipurpose units built in 2021 and 2022 and equipped with two cranes capable of tandem lifts of up to 500 tonnes. The units are designed to handle project and heavylift cargoes as well as bulk and general cargo.

Ernst Russ said the deal forms part of its long-term fleet strategy and will strengthen earnings visibility through secured employment. The additions also lower the average fleet age and broaden the company’s exposure beyond its core container shipping business.

Co-chief executive and chief commercial officer Joseph Schuchmann said the company sees solid fundamentals in the multipurpose market, pointing to tight vessel supply and steady demand.

Ernst Russ currently controls a fleet of 25 vessels, mainly feeder and intermediate boxships, alongside a handysize bulker and one multipurpose vessel. The group also has two 2,280 teu vessels on order.
