Splash247: Japan names 29 ports for recycling cargo investment push

Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) has designated 29 ports under a new programme aimed at developing logistics hubs for recyclable and secondary raw materials.

The first group of Circular Economy Ports includes Tomakomai, Chiba, Kawasaki, Himeji, Kitakyushu and Ube among a network spanning the country.

MLIT already provides support for port facilities used to store and handle recyclable cargo, while Japan’s Ministry of the Environment is preparing funding for cargo-handling equipment used in recycled-material supply chains.

Projects at the 29 designated ports are expected to receive additional weighting when applications for that equipment support are assessed.

The programme is intended to develop a wider inter-port logistics network capable of handling growing volumes and a broader range of recyclable cargoes.
