Seatrade Maritime: Brazil’s Tecon Santos receives 10 new cranes for expansion

Brazil’s Tecon Santos terminal has added two new STS cranes and eight electric rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes as part of its expansion, modernisation and emissions reduction programme.

Conventional operation of the new equipment purchased by Santos Brasil and manufactured by ZPMC, is expected to begin shortly. Meanwhile, remote operation will be implemented progressively, once the testing, system configuration and staff training processes have been completed, which could take up to a year.

The new gantry cranes incorporate the TPS (Truck Position System), which allows for the precise positioning of trucks during loading and unloading manoeuvres. These cranes can be operated remotely from a control centre, eliminating the need for operators to work in elevated cabins. Each unit is 50 metres high and has a reach of 70 metres, with the capacity to simultaneously move up to two loaded 20-foot containers, reaching a maximum of 100 tonnes.

Meanwhile, the eight electric RTGs join eight other units already in operation in the terminal yard. All are equipped with remote operation technology, implemented by Santos Brasil in Brazil in late 2024. An additional 30 electric RTGs are expected to be added in the coming years, gradually replacing the diesel models.

With the total replacement of the fleet, the estimated reduction will reach 713 tonnes per month, representing a 97% decrease in emissions associated with this equipment. The new operating model also introduces changes in safety, ergonomics and comfort for operators.
