Seatrade Maritime: Cosco Shipping orders 12 LNG dual-fuel container ships
Cosco Shipping Holdings chooses Jiangnan Shipyard for 12 container ship newbuildings. The two parties have entered into the shipbuilding contracts for the construction of 18,000 teu LNG dual-fuel boxships for a consideration of RMB1.4 billion ($200 million) each.
The shipbuilding transaction is conducive to the Group’s efforts on steadily increasing fleet capacity, achieving long-term and balanced development, further consolidating its industrial position and aligns with the Group’s global development strategy of its container shipping business, stated Cosco Shipping Holdings.
The 18,000 teu LNG dual-fuel container ship, is a vessel series called “Kun” (KUN-18N) independently developed and designed by Jiangnan Shipyard, using LNG as the main fuel. All its performance indicators reach the domestic advanced level, with the advantages of high efficiency and energy saving as well as environmental friendliness, which meets the ship owner’s strategies and plans to reduce carbon emissions of its fleet in the subsequent operation cycle.
The vessels are expected to be delivered between 2028 and 2029.
Upon delivery, the newbuilds are planned to be deployed on the east-west routes, which will enhance the service quality of the relevant routes, optimise the cost structure of the relevant routes, and thereby further enhance the company’s core competitiveness in the major market.
Jiangnan Shipyard has built and delivered twelve 5,100 teu container ships, eight 4,700 teu container ships, and six 21,000 teu container ships for Cosco Shipping Group.
