Seatrade Maritime: Port operations gradually resuming in Dar es Salaam
The Port of Dar es Salaam was reported to be gradually resuming operations on 4 November having shut down on 30 October as the country was placed under curfew due to civil unrest following the election.
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan was sworn in a second term on 3 November amid tight security the BBC reported. Samia was declared winner with 98% with opposition candidates either imprisoned or barred from running.
According to Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS) all port operations were suspended between 30 October and 1 November and mandatory curfew remains in place from 19:00 hrs to 07:00 hrs.
“As of 4 November, port operations in Dar es Salaam are beginning to resume gradually. However, service disruptions are still expected due to heightened security measures and restricted movement across the city,” ISS said.
It reported that severe fuel supply constraints continued to impact inland transport and logistics.
The Tanzanian Ports Authority is back online after an internet black out from 29 October – 3 November but makes no reference to unrest or ports closures.
“Our local team is safe and accounted for, and we are seeing positive signs of recovery both operationally and socially,” ISS said.
Dar Es Salaam is the country’s largest port and last year Adani International Ports Holdings (AIPH) signed a 30-year concession agreement to operate Container Terminal 2 (CT2).
