Seatrade-Maritime: Seapsan and Maersk unveil efficiency drive across 18 ships

Singapore-based asset owner and operator, Seaspan Corporation, and A.P. Moller-Maersk are to collaborate on a vessel efficiency programme costing about $75m covering 18 vessel on long-term charter to the Danish shipping company.
The initiative will start with the introduction of high-impact retrofits on four 13,000 teu vessels. The project will cover a range of upgrades, including shaft generators to save auxiliary engine fuel, main engine optimisation, high-efficiency propellers with pre-swirl installations, and carbon capture readiness ahead of future emission regulations.
The ships’ lashing bridges will be raised to increase cargo capacity, and the deadweight will be increased to boost load capability. Combined, these initiatives are expected to improve the ships’ slot costs by 10-13% while also improving fuel efficiency, performance, and regulatory readiness.
In a separate move, Seaspan’s joint venture partner, technology and engineering firm WattSpan has signed a non-binding Memorandum of Co-operation, setting out a year-long framework on vessel upgrades, energy efficiency improvements, and decarbonisation technologies.
Seaspan’s chief fleet operations officer, Dimitris Panagopoulos, commented: “This partnership reflects the kind of practical, high-impact collaboration needed to advance decarbonisation across the maritime industry. By working closely with Maersk, WattSpan, and Cosco Shipyard, we are combining technical expertise, operational insight, and long-term investment to improve vessel performance today while preparing our fleet for the fuels and technologies of the future.”
Head of chartering and newbuilding at Maersk, Anda Cristescu, said: “For many years, Seaspan has been a valued partner and significant provider of tonnage to the Maersk fleet. By working closely with Seaspan, we aim to implement vessel upgrades that reduce fuel costs, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and increase cargo capacity – all of which enhance the competitiveness of our fleet.”
