Seatrade-Maritime: World’s largest green methanol bunkering in Shanghai port

CMA CGM has partnered with SIPG Energy and Shanghai Electric to complete a landmark green shipping operation at the Port of Shanghai

The operation saw the successful bunkering 8,016 tons of domestically manufactured bio-methanol on board its 13,000 teu dual-fuel containership CMA CGM Osmium.

The vessel currently serves the SEAS 2 trade lane linking Asia and the East Coast of South America for CMA CGM.

The operation has officially established a new world record for the largest single-vessel bio-methanol bunkering volume, far exceeding the previous global benchmark of 3,643 tons set in March 2026.

Shanghai Electric supplies bio-methanol produced at its Taonan production base in Jilin Province. The green fuel is transported from Taonan to Dalian Port for consolidation and warehousing, before being shipped to Shanghai for final bunkering. The complete supply chain connects Northeast China’s green fuel production bases with Shanghai’s international shipping hub, strengthening the country’s integrated capabilities across fuel production, logistics and port bunkering services.

Christine Cabau-Woehrel, Executive Vice President of CMA CGM, commented that the record-setting bunkering marks a vital step in the group’s decarbonisation journey.” It proves that large-scale adoption of alternative marine fuels has become commercially viable through industrial chain collaboration. CMA CGM will continue deepening cooperation with Chinese partners to promote sustainable fuel applications and drive the global shipping industry’s green transformation.”

Zhang Da, General Manager of SIPG Energy, stated that the breakthrough not only refreshes global bunkering records but also reflects the substantial upgrade of Shanghai Port’s green fuel service capacity.
