Shippingtelegrap: Wan Hai Lines delivers ship for recycling after fire incident
Months after the container ship Wan Hai 503 caught fire during its voyage in the Indian ocean 54 nautical miles off the west coast of India on June 9, 2025, its operator Wan Hai Lines, has reported that the vessel has been sent for recycling.
The Singapore-flagged vessel, built in 2005 and managed by Wan Hai Lines (Singapore) Pte Ltd., has now been delivered for recycling.
To remind, on June 9 Wan Hai Lines notified relevant authorities and media that the vessel Wan Hai 503 (Chinese name: Wan Chun Lun), operated by the company, reported a fire on board after detecting thick smoke.
Last week, the company has issued an update following the incident onboard the vessel Wan Hai 503, confirming that all emergency response and casualty management measures have now been completed.
After the discharge of all containers at the port of refuge in Jebel Ali, on December 26, 2025, the vessel was towed to Drydock World Dubai.
It was subsequently delivered to APT Global pursuant to a BIMCO Recycling Contract.
“The vessel arrived safely alongside at the designated berth at Dry Docks World during the evening of 12 January 2026,” Wan Hai Lines said.
Wan Hai noted that the recycling company APT Global operates in compliance with the highest international standards.
The vessel will now be recycled, the company said, according to the requirements of the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships.
Wan Hail Lines stated that it will continue to engage with relevant authorities and stakeholders as required.
The company also expressed its gratitude to all relevant authorities, partners, and professional teams for their support and collaboration throughout the recovery effort.
