Splash247: ABB and Wallenius Marine launch venture for digital fleet optimisation

Swiss technology group ABB and Sweden-based ship designer and manager Wallenius Marine have formally established a new joint venture in Stockholm to expand their OVERSEA collaboration, a digital platform aimed at improving vessel efficiency and sustainability.

The two companies first introduced OVERSEA in September 2022 as a combined digital solution and fleet-support service. The platform uses ABB’s industrial analytics and AI capabilities alongside Wallenius Marine’s ship operation expertise to provide shipowners, operators and managers with tools to enhance performance and cut emissions.

Data from vessels worldwide is collected and analysed through ABB’s Genix Industrial IoT and AI Suite, with shore-based experts at the Stockholm Fleet Support Center providing tailored advice. The aim is to help operators reduce fuel consumption, boost reliability and optimise safety, the companies said.

Wallenius Marine chief executive Johan Mattsson said the venture allows the company to take its fleet support service global: “Through our partnership and close collaboration with ABB, we can now bring our innovative fleet support service to a global market.”

Tomas Arhippainen, business line manager of marine service and digital at ABB Marine and Ports, called the new company “a significant milestone,” adding that it enables customers to turn vessel data into “sustainable improvements in energy efficiency, safety and reliability.”
