Splash247: APM Terminals deepens automation partnership with Kalmar

Kalmar and APM Terminals have formed a strategic partnership to jointly develop and deploy the Kalmar One automation platform across container terminals.

The agreement will bring APM Terminals’ operational and technology expertise directly into the development of Kalmar’s automation software, with the two companies aligning the platform’s product roadmap around the requirements of live terminal operations.

Kalmar and APM Terminals will also collaborate on deploying the system at existing and prospective automated terminals.

The partnership includes plans to develop an Automation as a Service model, combining software, equipment and operational expertise through a service-based commercial structure.

Kalmar One is used to manage and optimise automated container-handling equipment, including automated straddle carriers and other horizontal transport systems.

APM Terminals already deploys the platform at its Pier 400 facility in Los Angeles, where Kalmar technology manages automated equipment operating at the 507-acre container terminal.

The two companies have previously worked together on automation and electrification projects at Pier 400 and APM Terminals’ Tanger Med operation.

The latest agreement moves the relationship beyond individual equipment orders and pilot projects, giving APM Terminals a direct role in shaping the future development of Kalmar’s terminal automation system.

APM Terminals operates facilities at more than 60 locations in 35 countries and recorded 25.8m container moves across its terminals in 2025.
