Splash247: Berg lands propulsion deal for Carisbrooke newbuilds

Sweden’s Berg Propulsion has secured a contract to supply integrated propulsion systems for six multipurpose cargo vessels being built in China for UK owner Carisbrooke Shipping.

The six 7,000 dwt vessels will be constructed by Jiangsu Dajin Heavy Industry to a Groot Ship Design design, with deliveries scheduled between the third quarter of 2027 and the first quarter of 2029.

Each vessel will be fitted with Berg’s MPP950 propulsion package, including a gearbox, shaft alternator, MPC800M control system and the company’s Dynamic Drive software, which automatically optimises engine speed and propeller blade pitch to improve fuel efficiency under different operating conditions.

The order adds to Berg Propulsion’s growing presence at Jiangsu Dajin, where it has supplied propulsion systems for around 106 vessels since mid-2021.

The companies strengthened their relationship last year after Berg was named Jiangsu Dajin’s supplier of the year for two consecutive years, leading to an extended cooperation agreement.

Mattias Hansson, senior global sales manager at Berg Propulsion, said the propulsion package had already been proven on a series of multipurpose vessels delivered by the yard.

“This new 7,000 dwt MPV contract is a strong recognition from a customer well known for premium service provision of its confidence in the energy efficiency, reliability and safety of Berg Propulsion products,” he said.

The vessels are based on Groot Ship Design’s 6600 XL platform, modified to increase deadweight to more than 7,000 tonnes while keeping gross tonnage below 5,000.

For Berg, the latest contract reinforces China’s importance to its business as shipyards continue to invest in more fuel-efficient propulsion solutions to meet tightening emissions regulations and reduce operating costs.

Beyond the Carisbrooke project, Berg is supplying propulsion equipment for a wide range of Chinese newbuildings, including ro-ro vessels, container ships, cement carriers, offshore vessels, tugs, chemical and product tankers, and DP vessels. The company is also increasingly providing propulsion systems integrated with electrical solutions and wind-assisted propulsion technologies as owners pursue further efficiency gains.
