Splash247: CEVA rolls out wind-powered shipping across Atlantic
CEVA Logistics, the logistics arm of French liner giant CMA CGM, has introduced wind-powered shipping services as part of its FORPLANET low-carbon logistics offering.
The new services target cargo flows between France, North America, South America and the French West Indies, using wind-powered vessels that the company says can cut CO₂e emissions by up to 90% compared with conventional ocean transport, depending on the technology used.
CEVA said the offering includes full-container load and less-than-container load shipments as well as palletised cargo. The services can handle a wide range of freight, including temperature-controlled goods, hazardous cargo and oversized shipments.
Transit times on the transatlantic routes are expected to range from about 10 to 18 days, with regular and spot sailings available. Routes include connections from French ports such as Fécamp, Saint-Nazaire and Saint-Malo to destinations including New York, Halifax, Baltimore, Pointe-à-Pitre and São Sebastião.
The logistics group said the maritime leg can be combined with rail, barge or low-emission trucking options to provide lower-carbon door-to-door transport.
Wind propulsion is gaining traction as shipowners and cargo interests look for ways to cut emissions and comply with tightening environmental rules. CEVA said the new services expand its FORPLANET range of logistics solutions aimed at helping customers reduce supply-chain emissions and form part of its wider target to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
