Splash247: Charleston extends inland reach with Huntsville rail link

The Port of Charleston has added a daily direct rail connection to Huntsville, Alabama, extending its inland reach into the North Alabama and Middle Tennessee cargo markets.

Norfolk Southern has launched the intermodal service with immediate effect, giving importers and exporters a direct rail option between Charleston and one of the US Southeast’s fastest-growing inland markets.

The new connection expands Charleston’s competitive hinterland and adds another route for cargo moving between the port and manufacturing and distribution centres across the Southeast.

Rail already accounts for around 25% of South Carolina Ports’ volumes. Charleston also has direct connectivity through Inland Ports Greer and Dillon and links to intermodal hubs including Memphis, Atlanta, Birmingham, Nashville, Charlotte and Louisville.
