Splash247: Delaware breaks ground on $669m container terminal

The US state of Delaware has broken ground on a $669m new container terminal on the Delaware River, moving one of the region’s largest port projects into construction.

The Delaware Container Terminal is being developed at the former Edgemoor industrial site near the existing Port of Wilmington by Diamond State Port Corporation and private terminal operator Enstructure.

The 137-acre terminal will have a 2,700-foot quay with a depth of 45 feet and annual capacity of 1.2m teu. It will be capable of handling containerships of up to 16,000 teu.

Equipment plans include seven electric ship-to-shore cranes and 24 electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes, together with supporting charging infrastructure. The facility will also have Class I rail access and connections to the main highway network serving the US Northeast.

The project is backed by $225m from Enstructure, $325m from the state of Delaware and $119m in federal funding, including support from the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Ports programme.

Diamond State Port Corporation owns the site, while Enstructure is responsible for developing the terminal and will operate it under a long-term concession.

The terminal is now scheduled to open in early 2029.
