Splash247: HD Hyundai and Naver Cloud team up on shipbuilding AI ecosystem

HD Hyundai has partnered with Naver Cloud to develop an artificial intelligence ecosystem for the shipbuilding industry, combining one of South Korea’s largest industrial datasets with advanced AI and cloud computing capabilities.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has signed a memorandum of understanding with Naver Cloud covering specialist AI models, cloud infrastructure, software-defined vessels and digital shipyard technologies.

Naver is South Korea’s dominant domestic internet company and is often described as the country’s answer to Google. Best known for operating South Korea’s leading search engine, the group has expanded into e-commerce, payments, digital content, enterprise software, cloud computing and generative AI.

Naver Cloud is the group division responsible for cloud services, data centres and enterprise AI technologies.<

At the heart of the partnership is the development of AI systems designed specifically for shipbuilding. HD Hyundai said the initiative would combine Naver’s technology with more than 200m shipbuilding and offshore data records accumulated by the company.

The companies also plan to work together on software-defined vessels, under which more ship functions and capabilities are controlled and upgraded through software.

The partnership extends to the construction and power supply of data centres. HD Hyundai will explore using its environmentally friendly engine technology, energy storage systems and hydrogen fuel cells to provide power infrastructure for Naver facilities.

South Korea’s major shipbuilders are investing heavily in AI-assisted engineering, autonomous navigation and connected shipyards as they seek to improve productivity, address labour shortages and develop increasingly software-driven vessels.
