Splash247: HD Hyundai and Weathernews target 8,000 ships with AI routing

HD Hyundai Marine Solution has teamed up with Japanese weather intelligence specialist Weathernews to expand an AI-powered voyage optimisation service across the global fleet.
The companies signed a business cooperation agreement at Weathernews’ headquarters in Chiba, covering initial contracts in South Korea and joint international marketing.
Their combined AI route optimisation solution, known as OSR-OW, brings together vessel operating data from HD Hyundai Marine Solution with Weathernews’ forecasting capabilities to recommend more efficient routes.
Trials using actual voyage data showed fuel savings of at least 3% compared with existing routes, according to HD Hyundai Marine Solution. The company said the reduction could materially lower operating costs while helping owners respond to tightening emissions regulations.
The solution has also been designed for rapid deployment. Ships already using either company’s services can adopt OSR-OW without installing additional hardware or software.
HD Hyundai Marine Solution and Weathernews plan to expand the service gradually across approximately 8,000 vessels currently under their management.
Kim Sung-joon, chief executive of HD Hyundai Marine Solution, said: “We will supply the market with an optimal solution that can catch two rabbits: reducing fuel costs and responding to environmental regulations.”
