Splash247: ICTSI adds Lae capacity as overflow berth demand grows

ICTSI is expanding cargo-handling capacity at Papua New Guinea’s main container gateway after higher vessel and cargo activity prompted the operator to activate additional berth capacity at Lae.

South Pacific International Container Terminal has deployed a reach stacker, two empty-container handlers and five terminal trucks and trailers at Lae Main Wharf, which is now being used as an overflow berth for the Lae Tidal Basin terminal. The equipment adds to a mobile harbour crane already working the wharf.

The move gives ICTSI additional working capacity beyond the main terminal footprint and greater flexibility to handle higher vessel traffic.

ICTSI South Pacific is also preparing to add rubber-tyred gantry cranes at both Lae and Motukea International Terminal to increase storage density and improve truck turnaround. A new gate camera system is also due to be installed.
