Splash247: ICTSI opens Manzanillo terminal to 24,000 teu ships

International Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI) has received approval for its Contecon Manzanillo terminal in Mexico to handle ships drawing up to 15.5 m, making it the only terminal at the Port of Manzanillo authorised for vessels at that draft.

The approval allows the terminal to handle ships up to 400 m long, including ultra-large containerships of up to 24,000 teu.

The move comes as port authority Administración del Sistema Portuario Nacional Manzanillo (ASIPONA Manzanillo) continues dredging and basin-conditioning works aimed at accommodating deeper-draft vessels.

ICTSI is meanwhile progressing Phase 3B of the terminal’s expansion, which will add 227 m of quay, two quay cranes and nine rubber-tyred gantry cranes.

Contecon Manzanillo currently has annual capacity of around 1.8m teu. Phase 3B is expected to lift this to 2m teu, while the operator is ultimately targeting a 17 m operational draft at its new berths.
