Splash247: Impala opens $20m mineral logistics hub at Port of Arica

Impala Terminals has opened a $20m mineral handling and storage facility at Chile’s Arica port, shifting a significant part of the gateway’s Bolivian mineral traffic away from the main port area.

The new warehouse is located in the port’s Activity Extension Zone (ZEAP) and covers around 11,100 sq m. The project also includes 420 Rotainer tipping containers and a sealed truck transport system linking the facility with quayside operations.

Arica port authority said the new setup will progressively reduce mineral storage inside the port, freeing up terminal space and giving operators greater flexibility in berth planning while cutting vessel handling times.

The additional infrastructure is also designed to increase transfer capacity and allow Arica to take on further mineral volumes tied to Bolivia’s foreign trade.

Impala said the greenfield project took just over two years to develop, with construction completed at the end of 2025 and final operating permits secured earlier this year. The facility is opening fully contracted.

The project was developed following a tender launched by the port as part of the continued buildout of the ZEAP logistics area outside the main port footprint.

Arica is one of Bolivia’s principal Pacific gateways, handling mineral concentrates and other import and export cargo moving between the landlocked country and overseas markets.
