Splash247: India puts port containers into the hyperloop

India is preparing to test moving loaded shipping containers by hyperloop in Mumbai.

State-owned Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) has placed an order with TuTr Hyperloop, a startup incubated at IIT Madras, for a freight pilot valued at around ₹200m-₹230m ($2.2m-$2.5m).

The initial test will focus on moving a fully loaded container through a hyperloop system, with a possible future application linking a Mumbai port with a CWC logistics facility. 

CWC managing director Santosh Sinha described the project as an R&D initiative designed to test whether the technology can work in real-world freight conditions. Implementation is targeted within roughly a year.

Hyperloop systems use low-pressure tubes and magnetically propelled pods to move cargo or passengers at very high speed with reduced friction.

India has become one of the more active countries in keeping hyperloop development alive after enthusiasm cooled elsewhere. The Mumbai project gives the concept a notably practical test case.
