Maritime software risks drifting towards a new digital monoculture as developers increasingly build products around the same foundation models, conversational interfaces and AI-generated design conventions.
The immediate consequence may be a succession of remarkably similar platforms: fleet maps, KPI cards, alert panels and a chatbot promising instant access to operational data. The greater concern, however, is that supposedly independent products could inherit the same reasoning weaknesses, hallucination patterns and blind spots. The convergence is already visible, and is set to become increasingly obvious with the next rollout of platform updates coming soon.
It is too early to claim that Claude powers most maritime platforms. What is clear is that shipping is embracing a product philosophy popularised by Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot: conversation is becoming the new navigation menu.
Research suggests this can promote sameness. A small 2026 study of AI-generated interfaces found that five dashboards created by Figma Make without detailed expert specifications all placed KPI cards across the top. More precise prompts produced greater variation. Broader research has similarly found that generative AI can improve individual creative output while reducing diversity across a group.
Visual uniformity is largely a commercial problem. Cognitive uniformity could become an operational risk. If chartering, sanctions, maintenance and compliance products depend on the same model, multiple systems might reach the same incorrect conclusion—not through independent corroboration, but because they asked the same digital brain similar questions.
Research led by Linnaeus University and DNV has recommended hybrid maritime systems combining language models with conventional machine-learning and optimisation tools. It also stressed retrieval-augmented generation, secure data handling, human oversight and the ability to replace the underlying model.
The lasting value of maritime technology will consequently reside outside the chatbot: proprietary data, maritime-specific logic, workflow integration, rigorous testing, audit trails and human approval for consequential actions.
Claude is ultimately closer to an engine than an entire ship. Connected to generic data and poorly specified workflows, it may produce another competent but interchangeable dashboard. Connected to decades of verified operational history and carefully tested maritime processes, it can support something genuinely distinctive.
