Splash247: Klaipėda secures $115m EIB loan for port upgrades
Published by Splash247
Lithuania’s Port of Klaipėda has secured a €100m ($115m) loan from the European Investment Bank to fund a package of infrastructure upgrades spanning new quays, dredging, breakwaters and energy projects.
The financing agreement covers up to half of a wider €201m investment programme being carried out by the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority.
Projects backed by the loan include upgrades to port infrastructure for offshore wind development, dredging works and reinforcement of breakwaters. Funding will also support shore power for ferries, green hydrogen infrastructure and new low-emission port vessels.
Part of the programme will adapt the port’s new cruise terminal for dual civilian and military use, allowing Klaipėda to accommodate NATO vessels and handle allied logistics requirements.
The investment programme is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027.
The financing comes as Klaipėda pushes ahead with a much larger expansion programme in the southern part of the port. Site preparation has already started for the development, which will create around 100 ha of new port territory and significantly increase the Lithuanian gateway’s long-term cargo handling capacity.
