Splash247: KR and HD Hyundai complete Korea’s first ammonia-fuelled vessel trial

Korean Register (KR) and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries have completed sea trials of South Korea’s first ammonia dual-fuel propulsion vessel, marking another step in the country’s efforts to establish ammonia as a commercial marine fuel.
The trial forms part of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries’ Green Shipping Corridor Construction Support Project, which aims to develop the technical framework needed for operating ammonia-fuelled ships in domestic waters.
According to KR, the trials generated operational data covering the vessel’s ammonia fuel supply system and dual-fuel engine. The information will be used to develop domestic technical guidelines for ammonia-powered vessels and support future regulatory work.
The project comes as South Korea looks to strengthen its position in the emerging market for low- and zero-carbon shipping technologies while supporting the wider adoption of alternative fuels.
A spokesperson for HD Hyundai said the trial demonstrated progress in applying ammonia as a marine fuel by combining the group’s research and development capabilities with operational expertise.
The company added that the project would help build a more sustainable maritime industry while strengthening the competitiveness of South Korea’s shipbuilding sector.
Kim Daeheon, executive vice president of KR’s research and development division, said the collaboration had established an important technical foundation for the introduction of ammonia-fuelled ships.
“We will continue to drive national projects forward together with HD Hyundai and establish technical standards befitting the era of Green Shipping Corridors,” he said.
The sea trial follows growing investment by South Korean shipbuilders, engine manufacturers and classification societies in ammonia propulsion technology. HD Hyundai has been developing ammonia-capable engines and fuel systems, while KR has expanded its work on classification rules and safety standards for alternative-fuelled vessels.
