Splash247: NorthStandard backs anti-spoofing navigation technology

NorthStandard has partnered with SGM Technology to give its members access to a navigation resilience system designed to counter the growing threat from GNSS jamming and spoofing.

The marine insurer is offering members a 15% discount on PntGuard, a platform that authenticates vessel position signals in real time and provides an independent position source when conventional GNSS data becomes unreliable.

GNSS interference has become an increasingly serious operational issue for commercial shipping, particularly around conflict zones, with spoofing capable of displaying false vessel positions and jamming interrupting satellite navigation signals altogether.

PntGuard uses NAL Technologies’ assured positioning, navigation and timing technology and the Iridium PNT satellite service to provide continuous authenticated positioning independent of GNSS.

The system compares a vessel’s GNSS feed with an authenticated signal and gives visual and audible warnings when interference is detected.

“At a time when GNSS integrity is threatened as never before, PntGuard enables early warning of interference events, upholding navigational resilience and situational awareness,” said Colin Gillespie, NorthStandard’s global head of loss prevention.

SGM Technology chief commercial officer Alexander Wiik said GNSS interference was “no longer confined to conflict zones”, with disruption increasingly affecting commercial shipping globally.

PntGuard will become part of NorthStandard’s GetSET! portfolio of safety and efficiency technologies, which already includes platforms from GlobeView, Orca AI, Shipin and VPS.
