Splash247: Port of Tauranga’s Stella Passage expansion clears fast-track hurdle

Port of Tauranga has moved a step closer to its long-delayed Stella Passage expansion after a fast-track expert panel issued a draft decision proposing to grant all approvals sought for the project, subject to conditions.

The development will extend the Sulphur Point container berth by 385 metres in two stages and the Mount Maunganui wharves by 315 metres, converting existing cargo storage land within the port’s current footprint. The scheme also includes reclamation behind the new wharves and dredging of Stella Passage.

Port of Tauranga has two days to comment on the proposed conditions, with other parties also able to respond before the panel issues its final decision, which is due in early September.

Chief executive Leonard Sampson said the expansion was urgently needed with the port currently at capacity, adding that the additional infrastructure would reduce costs for importers and exporters and create further opportunities to decarbonise cargo movements.
