Splash247: PSA taps Motorola radio network to support Tuas mega port rollout
As work ramps up on the Tuas Mega Port.
The move centres on deploying a TETRA digital radio network to support day-to-day operations, with the system already handling more than 4,000 users and around 540,000 voice calls a day.
For a port moving over 40m teu annually and linking to more than 600 ports worldwide, keeping operations coordinated is critical, particularly as automation and scale increase.
Philbert Chua, container division managing director at PSA Singapore, said: “PSA Singapore is a strategic hub for global trade that facilitates the movement of more than 40m teu shipping containers annually across 600 ports around the world. The development of the Tuas Mega Port is a long-term strategic investment that leverages advanced technologies and innovations to strengthen Singapore’s competitiveness, resilience and agility in managing the growing complexities and challenges of global supply chains.”
The Tuas project is central to that plan. Being developed in phases through to the 2040s, the site is expected to become the world’s largest fully automated container terminal, with capacity of up to 65m teu once complete.
As operations scale, the role of reliable communications becomes more important, especially in a 24/7 environment where vessels, containers and personnel are constantly on the move between terminals.
Motorola said the system is designed to keep teams connected in real time, helping manage safety and coordination across increasingly complex operations.
Rajat Gupta, vice president for Asia, Middle East and Africa at Motorola Solutions, said: “Our 20-year relationship with PSA Singapore is built on a shared understanding that safety is the foundation of productivity. As Tuas Port scales to become the world’s largest container terminal, our focus remains on providing the secure and reliable communication and services that personnel need to collaborate seamlessly every day.”
The deployment reflects a broader shift in major hub ports, where digital infrastructure and communications are becoming just as important as physical capacity in handling rising volumes and tighter turnaround demands.
