Splash247: Shenzhen International starts $140m Foshan port build

Hong Kong-listed Shenzhen International has broken ground on a RMB1bn ($140m) port project in Foshan, marking the start of construction on the group’s first port development in China’s Greater Bay Area.
Work started on August 22 on the Fuwan terminal in Foshan’s Gaoming district along the Xijiang River.
The project will comprise two 3,000-tonne general-purpose berths, with the marine structures designed to accommodate vessels of up to 5,000 tonnes. The development covers about 163 mu of land and is scheduled to enter operation in 2027.
Fuwan will operate as a public bulk and general cargo terminal, principally handling steel and aggregates, alongside grain and other commodities.
The project is being developed as part of Shenzhen International’s wider port network expansion into the Pearl River system. The company currently has a network centred on Nanjing Xiba and Jiangsu Jingjiang, with additional inland port interests at Shenqiu and Fengcheng.
Shenzhen International holds a 97.1% interest in the Fuwan project. The development cleared another major hurdle in June when China’s transport ministry approved the use of deepwater shoreline for the terminal, moving the scheme from the permitting stage towards construction.
The group’s port portfolio currently comprises 22 berths and around 3,300 m of shoreline, with combined annual handling capacity of about 100m tonnes.
Fuwan is intended to expand that network into the Greater Bay Area and connect with Shenzhen International’s existing logistics assets in Foshan.
