Splash247: Tacoma terminal orders four cranes from HD Hyundai

HD Hyundai Samho has secured an order to supply four container cranes to Washington United Terminals at the Port of Tacoma.

The contract covers two ship-to-shore cranes and two yard cranes, with delivery scheduled by 2028.

Washington United Terminals, a US subsidiary of South Korean carrier HMM, is replacing two ageing quay cranes and adding the yard equipment as part of a wider terminal modernisation programme.

HD Hyundai Samho will deliver the project on a turnkey basis, covering design, manufacturing, transportation, installation and commissioning.

The terminal currently operates eight quay cranes, including four supplied by HD Hyundai Samho in 1999.

The new equipment is intended to increase cargo-handling capacity, improve operational reliability and allow the facility to accommodate larger containerships.

The value of the contract was not disclosed.

The order gives HD Hyundai Samho a fresh foothold in the US container-crane market as American ports look to diversify their equipment supply chains.

The South Korean manufacturer has supplied 20 port cranes to US ports since entering the market in 1985.
