Splash247: Tenerife terminal adds digital platform to tackle gate bottlenecks

Boluda Shipping is extending the modernisation of its Tenerife container terminal into landside operations, bringing in TMEIC technology to digitise truck access and reduce congestion around the gate.

The Spanish group will deploy TMEIC’s Pulse Mobile platform at Boluda Maritime Terminals Tenerife, allowing hauliers and logistics operators to manage the process from receipt of a pickup or delivery order through information validation, terminal entry, cargo operations and departure.

Boluda said shifting more checks and exception handling upstream should allow as much as 80% of operational incidents to be dealt with before trucks reach the terminal gate. The platform can also be integrated with terminal operating systems, port community systems and Boluda’s existing digital infrastructure.

The rollout is the latest stage of a wider modernisation programme at the Santa Cruz de Tenerife facility. Boluda has allocated more than €40m ($45.9m) to the terminal, where it brought two super post-panamax ship-to-shore cranes and four hybrid RTGs into the equipment fleet earlier this year.

The two quay cranes can work ships up to 22 containers across and lift as much as 88 tonnes under hook, giving the terminal greater flexibility to handle ultra-large containerships. The four Konecranes hybrid RTGs have meanwhile increased yard stacking capacity.

BMT Tenerife operates from the El Bufadero quay and serves both Boluda Shipping and third-party carriers. Its facilities include a 478 m berthing line, 14 m depth and more than 110,000 sq m of terminal space.

TMEIC has been building its port automation business in parallel. In August, the company won an order for an AI-enabled gate system at Tokyo’s Aomi container terminal, using cameras and image recognition to automate container, vehicle and dangerous-goods identification.
