Splash247: Tilbury puts UK’s first hydrogen reachstacker to work

Forth Ports has put the UK’s first hydrogen fuel cell-powered reachstacker into live container operations at the Port of Tilbury.

The Hyster machine is fully operational at the Essex terminal following a two-year development programme involving Hyster and Briggs Equipment.

It uses a 60 kW Nuvera fuel cell to support a 130 kWh lithium-ion battery and carries 32 kg of hydrogen onboard.

The reachstacker is designed to work a full 12-hour shift and can be refuelled in under 30 minutes. GeoPura is providing on-site green hydrogen production, supply and refuelling infrastructure.

The deployment is a pre-production trial but moves the technology into day-to-day high-intensity port operations following earlier pilot work.
