Splash247: TraPac commissions first two electric mega-cranes at Oakland

TraPac has commissioned the first two of four new electric ship-to-shore cranes at its terminal in the Port of Oakland.

The Liebherr-built cranes arrived from Ireland in sections in January and were assembled on site by Pacific Crane Maintenance Company using International Longshore and Warehouse Union labour.

Standing more than 440 ft tall, the units can reach across ships up to 24 containers wide and work stacks up to 11 containers high on deck.

TraPac said the new cranes will allow its Oakland terminal to handle the largest containerships currently in service, increasing capacity and improving vessel turnaround times.

The equipment is fully electric, reducing emissions per lift and supporting the port’s wider decarbonisation programme.

The cranes will also strengthen Oakland’s role in refrigerated and agricultural exports, including fresh produce, wine and dairy products moving from California to overseas markets.

Two additional Liebherr cranes are under construction at the terminal and are expected to enter service in autumn 2026.

The four-crane programme marks the first deployment of European-built ship-to-shore cranes at a US West Coast port.
