Splash247: Wan Hai picks Nippon Paint Marine coatings for methanol newbuilds

Taiwanese container line Wan Hai Lines has selected Nippon Paint Marine to supply hull and heat-reflective coatings for two methanol dual-fuel containership newbuilds under construction at HD Hyundai Samho.

The agreement marks the first time the two companies have partnered on a newbuilding project, extending a relationship that has already seen more than 70 Wan Hai vessels coated with Nippon Paint Marine’s FASTAR antifouling system during drydockings since 2021.

The coating package will be applied to an 8,700 teu and a 16,000 teu containership, both being built in South Korea.

Nippon Paint Marine will supply its FASTAR XI antifouling coating for the hull and its EVER COOL heat-reflective coating for external surfaces. The company said the combination is designed to improve fuel efficiency by reducing hull resistance and lowering onboard cooling demand.

According to Nippon Paint Marine, FASTAR XI can deliver fuel savings of up to 14.1% over a 60-month period compared with the market average, while EVER COOL reduces heat transfer into accommodation and other enclosed spaces, cutting energy consumption for air conditioning.

Wan Hai said the coatings had already demonstrated fuel-saving benefits across its existing fleet and would support compliance with tightening environmental regulations while improving operational efficiency and controlling maintenance costs.
