Splash247: CMA CGM maps out AI-assisted containership

CMA CGM, Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute and Bureau Veritas have launched a joint project to develop an assisted containership concept built around artificial intelligence and onboard decision support.

The technology-neutral study will identify which navigation, energy-management and operational functions should receive greater automation and how much control should remain with the crew.

CMA CGM will contribute operational requirements and use cases. SDARI will handle ship design, systems engineering and smart-ship technology, while Bureau Veritas will cover classification, safety, human factors and regulatory risk.

The partners intend to produce a Concept of Operations and Basis of Design defining the roles of crew, assisted functions and shore-based support.

A selected concept will then be developed into technical specifications and submitted for approval in principle. The work will also include high-level capital and operating-cost estimates and a development roadmap.

The project is being positioned around assistance rather than crew removal. Human oversight and operational control will remain part of the design as the partners assess possible applications of the developing IMO MASS Code.
