Splash247: BigOceanData adds route optimisation to push smarter voyage planning
BigOceanData has launched a new route optimisation capability as part of its connected maritime operations platform, aiming to bring more dynamic, data-driven decision-making to voyage planning.
The new service integrates weather-aware routing, vessel-specific performance logic and operational constraints into a single workflow, allowing users to compare routes based on fuel use, cost, emissions, transit time and arrival planning. Built on ABB Ability™ Vessel Routing technology, the tool links planning directly with live operational visibility.
“Voyage decisions are rarely driven by distance alone,” said managing director Mark Hewish. “By bringing Route Optimisation into the BigOceanData platform, we are giving customers a more connected way to plan, evaluate and manage voyages with operational visibility built in.”
Designed for day-to-day operations, the system incorporates ship-specific behaviour, safety thresholds and route restrictions, enabling operators to adjust plans as conditions evolve rather than relying on static routing.
By embedding optimisation within a broader platform that includes vessel tracking and maritime intelligence, BigOceanData is targeting a shift away from siloed planning tools. The move reflects a wider industry trend toward integrated digital ecosystems, where continuous data flows allow operators to respond faster to changing conditions while improving efficiency and emissions performance.
