Splash247: DP World invests in Hapag-Lloyd’s green shipping programme

DP World has committed $1m to Hapag-Lloyd’s Ship Green programme, allowing customers in the Americas to reduce the carbon footprint of their ocean freight shipments through the use of waste-based biofuels.

The investment, to be made over the next four quarters, is expected to avoid 4,762 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions through the use of certified biofuels in place of conventional marine fuel.

Under the agreement, DP World’s Americas ocean freight division will offer customers verified carbon insets linked to Hapag-Lloyd’s biofuel programme, enabling emissions reductions to be allocated directly to their cargo movements.

Unlike carbon offsets, which compensate for emissions elsewhere, carbon insetting reduces emissions within the transport chain itself by replacing fossil fuels with lower-carbon alternatives.

Hapag-Lloyd said the certified waste-based biofuels used under the programme can cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 84% on a well-to-wake basis compared with conventional marine fuels.

The German carrier launched Ship Green as part of its wider decarbonisation strategy, offering cargo owners a way to lower transport emissions without waiting for large-scale availability of alternative-fuelled vessels.

Terry Donohoe, senior vice president of freight forwarding for DP World in the Americas, said the agreement would give customers access to measurable emissions reductions while supporting the company’s own sustainability targets.

“This partnership reflects how we are evolving our ocean freight business to deliver both commercial resilience and measurable sustainability outcomes,” he said.
