Splash247: Voucher model targets crew connectivity crunch

IEC Telecom has launched a voucher-based connectivity system aimed at tackling one of shipping’s most persistent welfare challenges: reliable and manageable internet access at sea.

Unveiled at Singapore Maritime Week, the IEC Voucher System introduces a structured, two-layer model combining centralised control for operators with on-demand access for crew. Through its OptiView-integrated manager and a user-facing portal, seafarers can activate data, track usage and purchase additional bundles, while companies retain oversight of consumption and policy.

The move comes as connectivity shifts from a perk to a baseline expectation across the APAC maritime sector, particularly with the rapid rollout of high-speed low earth orbit (LEO) services driving data usage sharply higher.

“Connectivity is no longer an added benefit, but an expectation that directly impacts crew wellbeing and operational performance,” said Melvin Tan, VP Maritime APAC at IEC Telecom.

The system also separates corporate, welfare and prepaid traffic, improving network security while allowing multiple users to connect simultaneously across hybrid networks.
