Splash247: Singapore doubles down on digital push with data exchange and AI drive
Singapore has unveiled two major digital initiatives at Singapore Maritime Week, signalling an acceleration in the city-state’s bid to cement its position as a leading smart shipping hub.
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has launched OCEANS-X, a new data and API exchange platform designed to enable secure, system-to-system connectivity across the maritime ecosystem. The platform allows shipping companies, service providers and government agencies to exchange trusted data directly, supporting more efficient port operations and smoother trade flows.
One of the first live use cases is digital port clearance, enabling shipping lines and agents to transmit required data directly from their own systems into MPA platforms, reducing manual input and errors. OCEANS-X also facilitates electronic exchange of ship certificates with partner ports, cutting reliance on paper documentation and streamlining verification processes.
Alongside this, MPA has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA) to accelerate artificial intelligence adoption across the sector, covering functions from ship management to bunkering.
“Artificial intelligence will increasingly shape how maritime operations are planned and executed,” said MPA chief executive Ang Wee Keong. “Companies that are able to apply AI effectively… will be better positioned to operate efficiently and remain competitive.”
SSA president TS Teo added: “AI is reshaping industries, and our maritime sector must move decisively to forge ahead.”
The significance of the twin announcements lies in their combined impact. While OCEANS-X builds the digital infrastructure needed for seamless data exchange across global supply chains, the AI initiative focuses on ensuring companies can actually leverage that data for operational and commercial gains.
Together, they represent a coordinated push to move beyond digitalisation as a concept towards real-world deployment, strengthening Singapore’s role as a testbed for next-generation maritime technologies and standards.
